Tour Bus Hell

Promise yourself:
Never venture onto a tour bus.
Buses aren’t the problem.
People who like them are.
The chatterers memorize facts to spew.
The beer drinkers work to charm the guides.
The short, fat ladies with ratted lacquer hair
will incessantly mother anyone,
and will not shut up,
even when asked,
frequently running to bathrooms
and towards any source of food
as if starved for centuries.
But if you [...]

Keep it simple
Legal
Low
Pay off early
Endure the blow
Hack off
The shackles of
Banks and lenders
Tear up the junk mail
Hide your name
From all senders
Exhale exasperation
From complicated living
Fall back into life
Lean, but interest free

Frightened by English

I laugh as I write,
Hear ghosts of past English teachers
Who warned me
I did not understand the language,
And I must
To survive.
I cast them off,
Went my own way,
To make my fortune and protect my nest.
I return to my pen,
Now a keyboard,
And find comfort I never knew.
I’ve had a reunion
With the naïve child inside,
Erupting like infant lava melting [...]

Irreversible

Once you have been given the gift
You cannot take it back.
This poses a dilemma
Ask for it
And it’s yours.
But once given,
Your life is never the same.

Lost Instinct

I did not know there were cows
Did not know there were plants
Did not know that food made me whole
All I knew was…
I needed money.
It wasn’t for food
Wasn’t for clothes
Nice cars, nice home
Certainly not those
It was for power
And now that I have it
I can take the time
Learn where food comes from
And why I must eat it
And [...]

Something is wrong
when you search for headphones
to shut out the sound.
They cost three hundred dollars.
Was I willing to pay?
I put on the phones
and listened.
Anxious to please,
the clerk had promised
they’d be very very silent.
Me,
headphones on,
she said,
“What do you think?”
I said,
“I can still hear you,”
and walked out the door.

Numbers Game

How long will you let me
Live this life of mine?
77?
88?
99?

I sit in death’s waiting room,
Joined by all friends and family.
Executioner’s row.

One by one
We go in a box,
Ashes
In a tin.
All we have left
Is what we are.

So if what I am
Is all I am
And I am happy with that,
Then my life can be done
Without dread,
Whenever it shall [...]

One Wiser

I have talked to an elder,
Someone the world rarely hears from.
It isn’t easy.
It takes time.
They have to trust you, know you mean it.
They don’t want their secrets used for profit,
Splashed in a headline,
Drowned at a cocktail party,
Autopsied by intellectuals.
They’ve been brought to their knees by life.
They no longer need to talk to anyone, anymore.
Unless you [...]
