Promise yourself:
Never venture onto a tour bus.
Buses aren’t the problem.
People who like them are.
The chatterers memorize facts to spew.
The beer drinkers work to charm the guides.
The short, fat ladies with ratted lacquer hair
will incessantly mother anyone,
and will not shut up,
even when asked,
frequently running to bathrooms
and towards any source of food
as if starved for centuries.
But if you [...]

Keep it simple
Legal
Low
Pay off early
Endure the blow
Hack off
The shackles of
Banks and lenders
Tear up the junk mail
Hide your name
From all senders
Exhale exasperation
From complicated living
Fall back into life
Lean, but interest free

I laugh as I write,
Hear ghosts of past English teachers

To survive.
I cast them off,
Went my own way,
To make my fortune and protect my nest.
I return to my pen,
Now a keyboard,

Wasn’t for clothes
Nice cars, nice home
Certainly not those
It was for power
And now that I have it
I can take the time
Learn where food comes from
And why I must eat it
And [...]
Seeking Deaf Headphones

Something is wrong
when you search for headphones
to shut out the sound.
They cost three hundred dollars.
Was I willing to pay?
I put on the phones
and listened.
Anxious to please,
the clerk had promised
they’d be very very silent.
Me,
headphones on,
she said,
“What do you think?”
I said,
“I can still hear you,”
and walked out the door.
I have talked to an elder,
Someone the world rarely hears from.
It isn’t easy.
It takes time.
They have to trust you, know you mean it.
They don’t want their secrets used for profit,
Splashed in a headline,
Drowned at a cocktail party,
Autopsied by intellectuals.
They’ve been brought to their knees by life.
They no longer need to talk to anyone, anymore.
Unless you [...]
